Obituary of Mrs. Newman
Mary Utah Newman, wife of George Newman, was born in Donigh, Ga., on August 12, 1850. Died at the home of her cousin, Mrs. M.E. Campbell, 1259 C avenue, Cedar Rapids, on June 8, 1920. Aged 69 years, nine months and 26 days.
Her maiden name of Kellar, she changed on December 13, 1870, by her marriage with George Newman at Dubuque, Iowa. Their wedded life of almost half a century was spent in Iowa and this general vicinity. The last eight months were lived in Cedar Rapids. To them were born three children, John, of Cedar Rapids; David, of Marion, and William of Sheffield, Iowa. These with 14 grandchildren, and 4 great grand children, mourn her loss.
Besides her own children, Mrs. Newman brought up two other families of five children each, who were left to her maternal interest and care.
Mrs. Newman was the oldest in a family of six sisters and two brothers, of these there survive, Sarah, Mrs. James Gregory, of Kansas City; Charles A., of Ottumwa; Fannie, Mrs. Samuel Cooper, of Chicago; Melvina, Mrs. E.G. Schoonover, of Balisca, Iowa; and Evelyn, Mrs. C.E. Goodrich, of Kansas City.
She was a member of the Marion Presbyterian church from whose edifice her funeral was conducted by the Pastor, Rev. Harry Glenn Finney, assisted by the Women's Relief Corps, of which patriotic organization she was an honored member. When nine years of age she was baptized at Epworth, Iowa.
Mrs. Newman had a wide circle of friends whose lives she had helpfully touched. Hers was a life of faith and good works. To such there is eternal morning.
