John Erik Halvorson, 32, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, March 7 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 14 at St. Stephens Lutheran Church with burial in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, both in Cedar Rapids. Public visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Erik was born February 6, 1988 in Cedar Rapids, the son of John Halvorson and Karen (Janzam) Middleswarth. He married Nicole “Nikki” Kindred on August 1, 2015 in Mount Vernon.

None of these words are adequate to sum up the person that Erik was, but they can paint an outline. Erik was generous, a generosity that was big and genuine. He was quick witted, well-read and deeply intelligent. Erik had a knack for amassing friends of all ages and from all walks of life, many of whom shared his quirky sense of humor and deeply loyal heart. He enjoyed gaming, anything Transformers, and taking his guns out to the range with many of those friends. Erik was a talented cook who took real pride in sharing his creations with his friends and loved ones. He loved to help others and found his calling at the age of 27 when he began his electrical apprenticeship at the IBEW. He took such joy in his union brothers. Erik was also an integral member of the non-profit Save Cedar Rapids Heritage.

Erik was devoted to his family. A rock to his mother, love in action for his in-laws. He was a deeply protective brother who teased as hard as he loved. He was the grandson who brought ice cream cones to his grandmas and spent the day playing Scrabble with them.

He was the best of all at being a husband and friend to his love of 20 years and wife of 4 years, Nikki. He made sure she was comfortable and happy before any other thing for all those years. The word “soulmate” does not seem to be adequate for that kind of love.

Erik’s love inspired all who knew him. It’s the kind of love that makes the whole world a better place.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 20 years, Nikki; his mother, Karen (Brian) Middleswarth of Ely, IA; a sister, Amanda (Grant) Halvorson of Cedar Rapids; Maternal grandmother, Lillian Janzam of Merrill, WI; paternal grandmother Eunice Halvorson of Marion, parents-in-law Jerry and Lisa Kindred of Palo, IA; a brother-in-law, Jared (Alecia) Kindred of Urbandale, IA; an aunt Kathy (Wayne) Jirovec of Wisconsin, an aunt Sheryl (Nick) Vacca of Washington state, an aunt Susie Turley of Texas, an aunt Nora Jo (Dr. Jeff) Hopkins, and one uncle Dr. Peter (Brian) all of Texas.

Preceded in death by: his father, John Halvorson; and his grandfathers, John Janzam Jr. and Stanton Halvorson.

Memorial may be directed to the family.
