Elizabeth R. McClain
Was born July 2, 1816, and died June 6, 1895 in the 79th year of her age at Des Moines, Iowa. She was married March 14, 1832, to James McClain and both were natives of Kentucky. Mr. McClain died in 1881, at about the same age as was his wife when she passed away. They came to Iowa in 1865, and settled in Linn county, near this city, where they resided together until his death, after which she went to Toledo to reside with her daughter. From there she removed to Des Moines, where she died.
Ten children were born to them; seven sons and three daughters; of these fives sons and one daughter survive the parents. They are J.V., W.H., Alonzo, who were present, and O.S. of Los Angelo, Cal., W.O., and Mrs. Etta Merrit, the latter was at her home in Des Moines too ill to be present at the funeral.
Mrs. McClain was a devote member of the First Congregational church of this city for many years. She was a devoted Christian woman, a true wife, and a fond mother.
The funeral services were held at the house of her son, J.V. McClain on Saturday June 8, at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. Jno. W. Gelger of the Congregational church, and assisted by Dr. Marshall.
Rev. Dr. Frisbie of Plymouth church, Des Moines, conducted a brief service at the house in Des Moines, prior to the departure to this city, where burial took place.
