Active in work for the blind practically all his life during which he served several years as superintendent of the Minnesota School for the Blind, Joseph E. Vance died Saturday afternoon, September 16 at his home 212 South Vendom street, Los Angeles, Calif., after an illness of six weeks. He was nearly 64 years of age. Mr. Vance was head of the school in Faribault for nine years, resigning his position in 1930 to go to the Pacific coast where he has been connected with the Justice department of Los Angeles county. In Faribault he was a member of the Congregational church. He was prominent in this city's civic affair. He was born October 22, 1870, at Fairfax, Ia. He attended Iowa State Teachers college, Cedar Falls during 1891 and 1892 and was graduated from the University of Iowa in 1894. For five years he superintended the schools at Marion, Ia. and was superintendent of the Iowa school for the Blind 10 years. IN RED CROSS SERVICE During the war he served in the Red Cross and following that was head of the Evergreen School for the Blind at Baltimore, Md., in connection with the veterans' hospital. He was superintendent of that institution from 1918 to 1921 in which year he came to Faribault. In 1902 he married Jennie B. Krebs at Cedar Rapids. Surviving are his widow; four daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Karp, St. Paul, Mrs. Ruth Thompson, Davenport, Ia.; Virginia, Los Angeles and Eleanor J., Newark, N. J.; three sons, Harry H., Faribault, Joseph E. Jr., Los Angeles, and Stanley K. Cambridge, Minn. One son, Robert A. Vance, died in 1930. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 o'clock from the Soveri mortuary in Glendale, Calif. Honoring his memory, a service will be conducted at the Minnesota School for the Blind tomorrow at 8:00 a. m. were M. R. Vevie, his successor, is now superintendent.
