PIONEER RESIDENT LAID AT REST HERE
J. Wesley Gibson Passes Away Following a Long Illness
J. Wesley Gibson, a pioneer resident of Marion, died Saturday following a lingering illness, at the age of 70 years. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Pingrey chapel, being in charge of Rev. Earle A. Baker, Rev. Harry G. Finney. Members of Marion lodge No. 6 and Trojan lodge No. 548 attended in a body and had charge of the services at the grave, the interment being in Oak Shade cemetery.
John Wesley Gibson, son of Andrew J. and Harriet Gibson, was born in Chester County, Pa., August 27, 1846, and died at Marion, Iowa, February 14, 1925. He came to Marion with his parents when about 14 years of age. During his young manhood he was employed in the McElhenny drug store at Marion, one of the pioneer drug stores of this vicinity, where he became a registered pharmacist. When still a young man, he went to St. Joseph, Mo., where the greater part of his active life was spent in conducting a drug store. On account of his physical inability to continue an active life, he returned to Marion about 15 years ago, where his only near relatives resided, and has since lived in retirement.
Nearly four years ago, he had the misfortune of meeting with an accident by falling and breaking his hip. Since that time he has been almost helpless and has spent a considerable of that time in the hospital or under the special care of relatives and kind friends.
Through all of his physical ailments he was very patient and at all times, looked on the bright side of life. He was of a jovial disposition, and even during his physical affliction he was jocular with his friends, was, at all times, optimistic in his views, never complained of his condition and was cheerful to the last.
Nothwithstanding, the greater part of his life was spent away from Marion, he took a deep interest in affairs at Marion and always called it his home. During his last years, when he was unable to be out, he was constantly inquiring about the few remaining pioneers and their general welfare.
Early in life he was baptized in the M.E. church and was an attendant at that church until prevented by infirmities.
He was very much interested in Free Masonry and held a life membership in all branches of the Masonic Order at St. Joseph, Mo. Although not a member of the local lodges, he rarely missed a meeting while able to attend.
He was prominent in Masonry and a member of the Methodist church. The only near relatives surviving are three neices[sic], Mrs. J.W. Bowman of this city, Mrs. H.W. Putman of Topeka, Kansas and Harriett Gibson of Washington.
