MICK BURT MCCOY
Cedar Rapids

Mick Burt McCoy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2019, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, Iowa. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, at Marion Methodist Church, 5050 Rec Dr., Marion, officiated by the Rev. Phil Rogers. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Mick was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, the first of five children to Elmer Burton McCoy and Helen BuWalda McCoy. Mick was raised on a farm. He enjoyed showing Shetland ponies and helping his neighbor with his Black Angus cows. Mick graduated in a small class of 21 from Agency High School. Mick still remained in contact with his classmates. Mick met his wife, Judi, while working together in a supermarket in Cedar Rapids. They dated for five months before eloping. Judi's mother was non-forgiving for the fact that Mick and Judi eloped, but years later when Judi's mom passed away, Judi found a Western Union telegram message that was sent from Judi's father to his father stating that he and Judi's mother had eloped to Washington state and they needed money to get back to Iowa. If only we had known! Mick and Judi had a long love story. He often said the best part of his life was meeting and marrying Judi and having their children.
Mick worked at Rapids Chevrolet from 1960 to 1986, when it closed. Mick loved cars. Having Mick work in an automobile dealership was like putting a kid in a candy store. At least two times a month, he saw a car he just had to buy. After Rapids Chevrolet closed, Mick went to work with Judi at Iowa Realty, and remained with her at Iowa Realty until he was too ill to come to work.
Mick is survived by his wife, Judi; their two beautiful children, Stephen Scott (Valerie) McCoy and Deb (Ron) Jurkowski, both of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Stewart McCoy (Michelle Haydn) of San Francisco, Ronni McCoy (Dan Smith) of Berkeley, Calif., and Daniel McCoy of Boston; siblings, Karen (Bruce) Rhoads of Cedar Rapids, Joan Stien of Newhall, Iowa, Joe (Verlene) McCoy of Cedar Rapids and Chuck (Tina) McCoy of Batavia, Iowa; a cousin raised by Mick's parents who was like a sister to him, Jeannie (Ed) Brown of Prescott, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Stan (Sheryl) Doud of Des Moines, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins, all of whom are so special to Mick and Judi; and Mick's faithful companion, Be-Bop-A-Loo-La. He loved his dog so much. Be-Bop is in mourning now, along with the rest of us.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Helen McCoy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given in honor of Mick to the Anna Purna Ghosh Foundation or to the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
