MARY J. DARR IS DEAD
FOR MANY YEARS A FAMILIAR FIGURE.
Death Occurred Yesterday Morning About 4 O'clock--Leaves One Son in Pueblo.
The familiar face and figure of Mrs. Mary J. Darr will never be seen on the streets again, for her death occurred yesterday morning, early, at the county home, where she has been during the past winter. This will probably not surprise many people for during the past many years any one who has seen her on the street marveled how she ever got along without being [can't read] in some manner. It was at 4 o'clock this morning when a telephone call from the home stated that she had quietly passed away. Her remains were brought to this city at noon. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
An Interesting Story.
It maybe only a rumor, but there is an interesting story concerning Mrs. Darr, and of the cause of her peculiar disposition. It is said that her mother was a woman of rare refinement and education, who married a man with considerable means. They came west, settled on a farm south of the city. Life was hard, the first child died. Hope died out of the young mother's heart and a little later the bright flames of her intellect waned, flickered and went out. The woman who was known to Cedar Rapids as Mary Darr was the second child of that unhappy mother.
For many years Mrs. Darr was a familiar figure on the streets of this city. She was nearly blind. Her Reason had almost left her and she imagined that she was the victim of all sorts of plots, intrigues and persecutions. To all who would listen to her she poured fourth at every opportunity long talks of her troubles and finally even the most patient and good-hearted gave a sign of dismay when they saw her coming. She did not hesitate to berate anyone of her acquaintances, no matter how much they had done for her, and gradually she came to be regarded even by those who had much sympathy for her as an affliction and a trial. They did their best to help her, but there was little which could be done for her. Finally she was taken to St. Luke's hospital and afterwards to the county home.
Her age is not definitely known, but she had passed the 80th year of her life. So far as is known she is survived by only one son, he residing in Pueblo, Col. A telegram was sent to him yesterday and until he arrives no funeral arrangements will be made.
