Joe Homans, Long Member of Marion City Council, Dead
Joseph E. Homans, a retired farmer, died at his home, 1340 5th avenue, Marion, Monday, August 30, at 2:45 a.m., following a long illness.
Mr. Homans was born August 13, 1866, at East Vassalboro, Me., the son of John W. and Harriette Ann Homans, and was married to Minerva Ford on October 7, 1892. The one son of this union died in infancy, and the wife died in Marion June 17, 1937. He was married again on Sept. 27, 1941, to Dora Ellis, who survives. the Only other known surviving near relative is a brother, Charles B. Homans, of Charles City.
Before coming to Marion, Mr. Homans resided at Fairfax in this county, and lived for some time on the Lakeside farm, south of Marion.
Mr. Homans was a man of unimpeachable integrity, and represented the Third ward on the Marion city council from 1934 to 1941. He was a member of the Linden camp, No. 45, Modern Woodmen of America.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, from the Yocom chapel, with the Rev. Benjamin H. Shaw, pastor of the Baptist church, in charge. Four former members of the city council who saw service in city affairs with him, served as pallbearers. They were E.B. Castle, Lewis Weis, George Burn and Henry Miller. Interment was in Oak Shade cemetery.
