Catharine Johnson was born in Stark county, Ohio, Jan. 6, 1828 and died May 25, 1912, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, aged 84 years, 4 months, 19 days.

She was married to John Gongwer, Feb. 15, 1844. In 1859 she was left a widow with eight children, two, Mrs. Lovina Sickman and Mrs. Rosanna Dole, having preceeded her to the other world. Those remaining are J. J. and S. B. Gongwer of Cedar Rapids and H. C. and I. J. Gongwer of West Branch; Mrs. Myra Bean of Anthony, Kansas, and Mrs. E. R. Eilett of Cedar Rapids with whom she resided at the time of her death.

Mrs. Gongwer has lived in Iowa the past eighteen years except one year which was spent with her daughter in Kansas. She was a lifelong member of the Friends church. She was confined to her bed for fourteen weeks, during the latter part of her illness she was a great sufferer and expressed her desire to go and be at rest. The funeral services were held Monday at 1:30 at her late home in Cedar Rapids, conducted by Rev. Ernest L. Gregory of Springdale. The male quartet of St. Pauls M.E. church furnished the music. Interment at Marion.
