Charles William Down, 82, of Northport, N.Y., formerly of Marion, died early Tuesday morning of Alzheimer's disease in a Huntington, N.Y., nursing home, where he had resided for seven years.
Born May 10, 1906, at Marion, he grew up there and graduated from Iowa State University in 1929. He married Katherine Ryley in 1964. Mr. Dow was employed by Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York from 1935 to 1956, when he retired as company president. From 1957 to 1971, he worked for C.I.T. Financial Corp. and was chairman of its financial committee. Mr. Dow also served as a trustee for Barnart College at New York, was on the Huntington Hospital and Human Resources boards, and was commodore of the Centerport Yacht Club.
Survivors include his wife; his sons, Michael of Huntington, N.Y., and John of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; two daughters, Melinda Hyatt of Nashville, Tenn., and Susan Clark of Titusville, Fla.; a brother, James of North Bend, Ore.; a sister, of South Bend, Ind.; eight grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Memorial services will be held later at Huntington, N.Y. The body will be cremated. Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, University of Iowa Foundation, Iowa City 52242.
