Charles Wood Died Sunday
Dean of Marion Grocerymen--Had Worked Here For Many Years
Funeral services were held yesterday for Charles P. Wood, 75, who died at his home at 635 Ninth avenue last Sunday evening at 5:30. He had been ill for over a year but until a week ago he was able to be up and around, making daily trips to the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Burmingham where he would visit each day and give his attention to his little grandson, Charles.
Mr. Wood was born at Gettysburg, Penn., Feb. 10, 1855 being the fifth oldest of a family of eleven boys and a girl. The place of his birth was close to the territory in which the Civil war was being fought at that time and several times during his early life he had to move with his family from the old homestead to live in a schoolhouse away from the battle grounds of the epic conflict between the north and the south.
He came west with his folks, Alexander and Elizabeth Wood, when he was still a youngster and settled near Marion. For years he worked around these parts and in 1876 he was married to Jane Snyder of Robins, to them being born eight children, three of which died of diphtheria. Those that are still living are George Wood, Marion; Mrs. Ethlye Burmingham, Marion; Mrs. Belle Davies, Clarion; Miss Goldie Wood, Marion; Mrs. Irene Jackson, Seattle, Wash., and Samuel Wood, Santa Barbara, Calif.
Mr. Wood was known as the dean of Marion grocerymen, having worked in such business practically all of his time while here. He tended store here until about a year ago when because of failing health he retired and left. He always had a great number of friends and with his courtesy and accommodating habits he won over a great number of close acquaintances.
One of the things that he liked very much was to care for his home and garden and he loved the out-of-doors, being an ardent lover of fishing and hunting.
He is survived by four daughters, two sons, four grandchildren, Genevieve and Kenneth Davies, Clarion; Mrs. Ralph Smoyer and Charles Burmingham of Marion. One brother, Benjamin F. Wood of San Bernadino, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Perry H. Briggs of Kent, Wash.
Since the death of his wife five years ago, Mr. Wood has made his home with his daughter, Goldie.
