OBITUARY.
MARY LINDEN ELLIS.
"Leaves have their time to fall,
And flowers to wither at the North wind's
breath,
And stars to set--but all--
Thou hast all seasons for thine own, oh!
Death."
Not only all seasons but all homes feel his unwelcomed presence. Two weeks ago it was the stalwart presence upon whom the home had leaned, today it is the gracious mother whose womanhood complete in the ripening influences of nearly sixty-one years whom the Reaper garners.
Mary Linden was born June 9, 1835, in Greene Co., Illinois, and when a young girl moved with her parents to Clayton Co., Iowa. When on Sept. 2, 1858, she was married to Bernard Ellis with whom she spent nearly 38 happy years. The home life knew something of toil and economy but brave hearts and the personal devotion of each to the other made toil sweet. After marriage the young couple for a time made their home in Wisconsin removing to Northwest Iowa in 1872 and coming here six years ago. Four children were born to them two dying in infancy, those living are Mrs. Addie Burbank of this city and Mrs. May McCauley of Omaha, Neb.
Mrs. Ellis was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, loved and prized by all. Five years ago under the preaching of Miss Downie she made a public ack[n]owledgement of her need of and reception of Jesus Christ as the soul's Savior, and during these years she walked and talked with Him.
Her illness antedates her death by three years, a heart difficulty made itself painfully apparent and sometimes threatened the end; she lived on to do her work. The sickness of her son-in-law with all its painful apprehension sealed her lips to any intimation of her own increasing weariness and pain; his recent death snapped the last fiber of her strong will and she lay down to rise no more. Dangerous symptoms followed in quick succession until the hour unhoped for by all, came. Conscious that the end was near she expressed to her pastor her unfaltering trust in her Redeemer, grateful that He received her as His own. At sunset on Monday last she entered that land that has no need of the sun or the moon for the Lamb in the light thereof. A loving patient mother, a devoted wife and a true christian gone to her reward.
The funeral services were held at her home at 2 p.m. on Wednesday conducted by her pastor Dr. J.G. Van Ness and was largely attended. The body was laid to rest in the city cemetery. Mrs. Ellis will be sincerely mourned not only by her husband and daughters and her sister Mrs. Gillie Tate of Wisconsin and other kindred, but by the whole community.
