Obituary of Mrs. Nellie Davis.
Nellie Elliott Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnston Elliott, was born in Marion, Iowa, May 2, 1868, surviving a sister and brother in the family of three children, and died in Marion on Nov. 17, 1911. The deceased graduated from the Marion high school and the Young Ladies' Seminary at Yonkers, N.Y., with due honors. In the year 1880, under the pastorate of Rev. W.A. Waterman, she consecrated herself to the Lord Jesus Christ, received baptism and united with the Congregational church. In the various grades of Sunday school classes in general, and special exercises of the Sunday school and in maturer years of church connection and service, she deported herself in praiseworthy character and devotion.
On the 14th day of December, 1881, she was united in marriage with Mr. T.J. Davis, the ceremony being held in the Congregational church and conducted by Rev. W.A. Waterman, her former pastor, and Rev. W.W. Gist, her pastor at that time. In this happy marital relation five children, abundant in health, happiness and promise, were born and early consecrated to God in that faith and love which characterized their parents. Besides her aged mother, Mrs. Esther Elliott, she is survived by the husband and her five children, as follows: Mrs. A.M. Reynolds, (La Verna), of Des Moines, whose little babe the grandmother was delighted to see consecrated on Sunday, the 5th of the present month, in the old home, which proved to be the last occasion of the family gathering. The services was by her former pastor, Rev. W.A. Waterman.
The other children of the deceased are: Esther, Priscilla, Elliott and Donovan. Mrs. Davis has been battling with the insidious progress of disease.
The funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. W.A. Waterman of Elgin, Ill., and Rev. W.W. Gist of Cedar Falls, both of whom were former pastors and long-time friends of the Davis family, conducted the services, which were simple and impressive. Mrs. Mary Preston Beaven of Cedar Rapids, a cousin of the deceased, rendered two beautiful solos. Interment was in Oak Shade cemetery.
