OBITUARY.
Died, at his home in Marion, January 10th, Augustus Wiechmann was born in Mecklenburg, Germany in the Grand Duchess of Schweich July 26, 1819. He came to New York City in 1832, and in 1853 united in marriage to Miss Margaret daughter of George and Barbara Webber, and in 1857, moved to Chicago, and in 1861, to Marion where he continued to reside until his death. Having no children of their own, they persuade Mary Nyere's parents, of the Rapids (the mother being a sister of Mrs. Weichman) to allow their daughter to live with them. On July 13th, 1878, Mrs. Weichman died, leaving the husband and niece in the old home. Mary's sister remained with them for a while, to help to tide them over lifes' sad billow, but duty soon called them elsewhere, and for the most of 12 years, uncle and niece had resided alone in the old homestead seemingly vieing with each other, to which could do the most to make it "sweet home." And one scarcely knows which to admire most, the readiness and liberality of the one providing, or the thoughtfullness[sic] and gentleness of the other in making that home attractive. So far as known, no unkind word or set, has ever, during all these years, desecrated that home, once hallowed by the Death Angel's presence.
Mr. Wiechman was a tailor by trade, and a successful workman until failing sight compelled his retirement. Although his health has not been good for some time, no one thought him seriously ill. He had consulted his physician last week and while he discovered some heart trouble, he apprehended no immediate danger. He had not been as well on Friday night, but insisted on coming to the table on Saturday morning for his breakfast, but before he reached it, his niece saw he was sick and helped him to his bed where in a few minutes he expired. The startling news soon spread over the city, and the sad event was everywhere the topic of conversation. How true it is that "in the midst of life we are in death."
The funeral services were held at the house, conducted by Rev. A.S. Marshall, and besides the large number of Marion and Cedar Rapids friends, there present were Mr. John Coenen of Harlan, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Bilkey, of Muscatine, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schneider, of Springfield, Ohio, relatives of the deceased.
