The only Confederate veteran of the Civil war living in Marion, David Baker, age 83, died Monday at 9 p.m. at St. Luke's hospital, where he had been ill nearly a month. He had been in poor health the last twelve years and had been confined to his bed part of the time for the last two years.
Mr. Baker fought through the entire Civil war and was a member of Company C, Eighth Kentucyk infantry. He enlisted at Covington, Ky., in 1863 when he was 20 years old and although he fought in most of the big battles, of the war and had many narrow escapes he carried only two small scars, one on his left hand and the other on his right ear.
As one of seven children, he was born on a plantation four miles south of Covington, Ky., where his father was a slave owner and conducted a large farm. His mother was a full-blooded Black Hawk Indian.
Following the war, Mr. Baker went to Colorado and Montana, where he was a rancher for twenty-seven years, three years of his time being spent with Buffalo Bill. He had many interesting experiences during his stay in the northwest country and came in contact with considerable danger at that time.
He returned to Iowa in 1891 and was married to Mary Goforth, and to this union were born eight children, two daughters and six sons, all of the boys being veterans of the World war.
Previous to moving to Marion in 1891, Mr. Baker had lived at Fort Madison, Kansas city, TOpeka, Grasshopper Falls, Texas, St. Joseph, Chillicothe, Mendota, Mo., Council Bluffs and Gil???. He worked here as an employee at the Milwaukee roundhouse and until he was struck by an automobile and had both legs broken several years ago, he was an active person in Marion.
He is surivived by four sons, Fred of Horeshoe[sic] Bend, Texas, Frank of Maquoketa, Charles of California and Paul L. of Cedar Rapids. His two daughters and two sons, Andrew J. and Harvey preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held to day at 10 a.m. at the Yocom chapel with Rev. F.O. Reisinger, officiating. Burial, was at Oak Shade.
