The Marion Sentinel Thursday May 30, 1907
The Late Mrs. A.T. Lathrop.
The funeral of Mrs. A.T. Lathrop was held at the home of her sister-in-law and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Garry Treat Thursday afternoon of last week. The minister in charge was Rev. Jennings of the Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. McDonald of the Baptist church. Many beautiful flowers showed the sympathy of friends who came out in spite of threatening weather to pay their last tribute to the dead. Music was furnished by Mrs. V.G. Shumack, Mrs. Benjamin Buckley, Dr. F.L. Sargeant and Mr. J.E. Bromwell. Mrs. Lathrop died at Omaha at the home of her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Bromwell. A funeral service was held there Wednesday afternoon, Rev. W.H. Reynolds, formerly of Marion, officiating. Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Bromwell, Mr. and Mrs. T.M. Bromwell and Mr. James Gageby came to attend the funeral.
Arabelle T. Gageby was born in Greensburg, Ind., April 30, 1830. She was the daughter of David and Melinda Gageby who were early settlers of that city. They are also original members of the Presbyterian church of that place, organized in 1826.
Mr. Gageby was ordained one of the ruling elders at that time, which office he held during his life, which closed February 25, 1848.
Arabelle was converted and joined the same church during the pastorate of Rev. J.G. Monfort, who was well known as the editor of the Herald and Presbyter.
On April 10, 1851, she was married to William E. Lathrop, and on October 6, 1853, they came to Marion and settled on the farm two miles southeast of this city where for twenty years they lived and experienced the joys and sorrows that come to the pioneers of a new country. During these years they were consistent and beloved members of the Presbyterian church of this city.
In April, 1873, the family returned to Greensburg, Ind., her native place, to make their home permanently. Here her husband and two lovely daughters, Flora and Fannie, sleep side by side in the silent city.
In the spring of 1883, she and her remaining daughter, Mrs. L.H. Bromwell, and her family moved to Nebraska, where she has made her home for the past twenty-four years. She had been in failing health for some time and, without suffering, sweetly fell asleep May 21, 1907.
The remaining near relatives of Mrs. Lathrop are her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Bromwell of Omaha; two grandchildren, Mrs. Elsie Horn of Omaha and Mrs. T.M. Bromwell of Minneapolis; a brother, James A. Gageby of Tama, Iowa, and a sister, Mrs. V.A. Lathrop of this city.
