THE SILENT REAPER
George Josselyn Gone to his Long Home.
At 4:30 yesterday afternoon occurred the death of George Josselyn, at the family home, 841 Fourth avenue, of cytitis. There were few of Mr. Josselyn's many friends who even knew of his serious illness, although he has not been in good health for the past three years, and the sad announcement of his death was a great surprise.
The deceased was born at Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies, August 1, 1821. Soon after his birth his father died. He went while a lad to England, where he made his home with an aunt. Until 17 years of age he lived with her in England and Belgium. She sent him to school, his educated being had at Neuwiede, Germany, a town on the Rhine. He was being educated for the profession of mechanical engineering. But before his education was completed the aunt met with financial reverses and Mr. Josselyn went back to his mother in the West Indies. Here he remained until 1839, when he and his mother came to the United States and settled at Dayton, O. Mr. Josselyn had learned the carpenter's trade and while at Dayton he became a contractor and superintended the erection of many building there and at Cincinnati. In 1843 he married Miss Anna Broadwell of Dayton, who now survives him. In 1842 the deceased came by way of the river route to Iowa and located at Burlington. He did not remain there long, however. He returned to Dayton and worked at his business until 1855, when he again came to this state and settled at Mt. Pleasant. Here he helped in the construction of the insane hospital, being foreman of carpenters and superintendent of construction. In 1866 he again left Iowa and lived for two years in Illinois. In 1868 he went to Independence, this state, and for a long time was connected with the building of the hospital at that place. In 1885 he removed to Cedar Rapids and in connection with his only son and child, H.S. Josselyn, built the residence on Fourth avenue which has been his home ever since. Since coming to this city he has been with the firm of Josselyn & Taylor as superintendent of construction.
The funeral will be held Monday at 10 o'clock. Interment at Oak Hill.
