CHEATS OFFICER BY ENDING HIS LIFE
J. Dobbs, For Whom Warrent Was Issued for Wife Desertion, Takes Dose of Laudanum.
While an officer with a warrant charging wife desertion was looking for him, J. Dobbs, a former employe in the mail room at the union passenger station, walked into his home at 1627 F avenue, Saturday evening, and drank a two-ounce bottle of laudanum. A physician was called and succeeded in arousing him from the stupor caused by the drug, but all efforts to save his life were without avail and he died about 9:30, following several violent convulsions.
Dobbs, so it seems, has been away from home a great deal of late, and had not done much toward the support of his family. Last Tuesday he came home, and taking a grip, said he was going to Moline in search of work. In the meantime a warrant had been issued for him on a charge of wife desertion, and had been placed in the hands of the police department for service. Whether Dobbs knew this or not is not known.
He returned from Moline Friday, and purchased the poison at a local drug store Saturday afternoon, giving as an excuse that he wanted it for a child with the earache. He then went to his home and telling his wife he was going to end it all drank the contents of the bottle. He was 33 [or 38] years of age and leaves a wife and three children.
