Death of Geo. W. Toms, Sr.
The death of Geo. W. Toms, Sr., occurred last Friday at his late home in Marion., The funeral was held Monday afternoon of this week at the Presbyterian church, Rev. M.L. Hutton, pastor of the Congregational church, being in charge of the services, assisted by Rev. Jennings, pastor of the Presbyterian church. The music was furnished by a quartet composed of Miss Goudy, Miss Gerhke, J.M. Thompson and W.B. Sebern. The pallbearers were Garry Treat, D.H. Correll, W.B. Carpenter, A.M. Secrist, Earl Granger and C.C. Carpenter. the following sketch of the life of the deceased was read by Rev. Hutton, who, at the conclusion of his remarks, recited the poem appended:
George W. Toms, Sr., was born in Tomstown, Pennsylbania, April 20th, 1818, and departed this life November 16th, 1906, at the age of 88 years, 6 months and 27 days. His native town was named for his father, John Toms.
He was married to Nancy Misener, of the same place, in the year 1838; to them were born eight children: four sons and four daughters. The mother departed this life Sept. 30th, 1875, at the age of 60 years and the eldest daughter, June 3rd, 1903, at the age of 59 years.
Mr. Toms, after receiving his college education, engaged in teaching school, which was his principal occupation for ten years. He served his native township as Justice of the Peace for fifteen consecutive years in connection with which he practiced surveying and conveyancing. He was elected County Register and Recorder in his native county for a term of four years. At the expiration of his term he was appointed manager of the Mount Alton Iron works, of Pennsylvania, in which capacity he served five years when he resigned his office and moved to Marion, June 27, 1867, where he has since resided, with the exception of a few years, he resided in Grand Rapids, Mich. He was converted to the Christian religion at the age of eighteen years and united with the church in the same year and has lived a consistent christian life for full 70 years. He was a kind and devoted husband and father, and under all circumstances he was a thorough christian gentleman in the full sense of the term.
He married his present wife, Mrs. Sarah Beckley, widow of Rev. Jacob Beckley, June 16, 1881, who with his four sons and three daughters--Geo. W. Toms, Jr., J. M. Toms, and Mrs. Robt. Smyth, of Marion; M.M. Toms, of Central City; W.H. Toms, of Barnesboro, Pa., Mrs. S.L. Winter, of Presbo, S.D., and Mrs. W.N. Fuller, of Grand Rapids, Mich.--21 grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, survive him.
