The Marion Register Wednesday November 1, 1893
Death of Hon. J.P. Carbee.
The news of the death of Hon. J.P Carbee of Brown township, this county, last Wednesday, occasioned surprise and sorrow in many Marion homes. Mr. Carbee was one of the old settlers of the county, and was a model citizen in every respect. We doubt if a better man was numbered among our people during the many years he resided here. He was respected by every one and most by those who knew him best. He was well along in years, but his general health was so good that his "sudden taking off" was a surprise to all. "In the midst of life we are in death" was never more clearly demonstrated than by this sad and unexpected event.
Mr. Carbee was born in Bath, New Hampshire, May 3d, 1823.
He came to Iowa and settled in Brown township, this county, in 1850 and entered 300 acres of government land located in sections 5 and 8 and had brought it to a high state of improvement, residing upon it until his death.
He was elected a member of the general assemble of Iowa in 1863 and served two years, he was reelected in 1865 and served until 1867. His reelection by a very large majority was a marked tribute to his worth, and a deserved recognition of his faithful and official services during his first term. Several times since he has been urged to return to the Legislature but always declined.
His illness was short--less than a week. His death will be mourned, not alone by family and relatives but by warm and devoted friends throughout the county and state.
