The Linn County Register Saturday August 17, 1861
DIED.
On Saturday, August 10, 1861, Rufus Dodd of Marion tp, aged eighty-five years four months and nineteen days.
He was born March 22, 1776, in the State of New Jersey. Was raised in western PA, Lived in Ohio, and died in Iowa. Being a citizen of Iowa since 1841, he is well known by many of the first settlers of Linn County, and was among the last of a numerous family whose decendents are scattered throug't many States of the Union. Having his birth, before the decleration[sic] of independance[sic] and living through all the stage of our government, no wonder we hear the out burst of patriotism when he read the news of a requisition "If I were young I would like to volunteer for this war," and again "if there is any thing for which I desire to live longer in this world, it is to see the termination of our present national difficulties." He was a christian too as well as a patriot. His faith in the Redeemer was strong, and his hope of eternal happiness bright. The close of his life has been long expected, by himself and friends. -- Now he is gone, and the world is better for his having lived in it.
