Harriett J. Keyes Dies Thursday In Monticello Home
Harriett J. Keyes, 1074 1/2 7th ave., Marion,d ied Thursday, May 31, at 4:30 a.m., in a Monticello nursing home.
She was born on Sept. 29, 1868, at Mount Vernon, the daughter of Marsden and Martha Whittington Keyes. She was graduated from the Mount Vernon high school in the class of 1885. She studied music, and when seventeen, she organized her first music class at Indianola, Nebr. She also taught music in Cedar Rapids for a number of years. She was married on June 1, 1893, to Arthur J. Keyes, at Mount Vernon. Mr. Keyes died at Marion in 1923. She as a member of the Marion Congregational church, Marion Linn Chapter of D.A.R., Musical Literary club, and the Theristrial club.
Mrs. Keyes is survived by a brother, Dr. Karl M. Keyes, of Monticello, and two sister, Mrs. W.H. (Margaret) Hoover and Mrs. Lewis E. (Florence) Mitchell, both of Mount Vernon. A son, Ralph, died in 1916.
Memorial services were conducted Saturday, at 2 p.m., in Murdoch chapel at Marion, by the Rev. Harry D. Green. Interment was in Oak Shade cemetery at Marion.
