DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS
-------------------------
TAUGHT IN MARION SCHOOL FOR TWENTY YEARS
-----------------------------
Gave Her Entire Life of Service to This Community. She Had been Ill Several Months.
Miss Elizabeth Marshell[sic], 67 who was loved by all who knew her, and who spent 43 years of her life in service for this community, died at her apartment, 1308 Eight Avenue, at 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Death followed an illiness[sic] of several months. Last June, she underwent an operation, and for a short time regained her strength.
Miss Marshall was born in Marion August 16, 1859. She was the oldest child of Reverand[sic] Alexander Marshall and Mary Christy Marshall. All of her life, she had made Marion her home. Her father was pastor of the Presbyterian church of Marion from the time of it's establishment in 1856 when he came here from Pennsylvania until his death fourtw[sic] years later, in 1896.
Her education was received in the Marion schools, where she was graduated from High School in 1875, the third class to receive their diplomas here. She attended college at Oxford Ohio, where she studied music and later took work at the University of Chicago. She was a great student added constantly to her store of knowlede[sic] by reading and travel.
Begining[sic], when so small her feet could not touch the pedals, until her illiness[sic] made it impossible, Miss Marshell[sic] was oranist[sic] at the Presbyterian church at Marion. She taught a Sunday school class also for more than 40 years. From early childhood she was a member of this church.
For 20 years she was principal of the Marion High school, giving up her position on account of failing health. She continued as Latin instructor, until she had completed 43 years of service. It was through her efforts that the L.O.V. club, a society for fostering interest in Latin, was organized in 1916. In her school work, her opportunity for helpfulness was greatest. By taking a personal interest in every pupil under her supervision, a word of encouragement, a bit of timely advice, and example, she inspired all who came in contact with her.
Miss Marshall was a member of the library board, for many years, and helped to make the library one of the most complete in the state. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the P.E.O. sisterhood, and was an active worker in the Therestrial club.
Her hobby was travel. Her three months vacation period was always spent in travel, and many times she went to Europe. She had visited every part of the United States.
She returned from a trip around the world in August 1925 and ti was during one of her talks at the Presbyterian church, June 12, following this trip she was stricken with the illiness[sic] which resulted in her death.
It had been her ambition to use much of her time in giving missionary talks in explaning[sic] of the conditions in non christern[sic] lands, where she visited. It was one of her great disappointments, in her last days, that she would be unable to carry out this plan.
Miss Marshall is survived by two siters[sic], Mrs. Mary Rosetta Phelps, of Heppner, Ore. and Miss Bertha Marshall of Brookline, Mass, a sister in law Mrs. Maude Marshall of Cedar Rapids two nephews, Walter Marshall of Milwaukee, and Frank Marshall of Waterloo, and one neice[sic] Mrs. Hubert Deming of Cedar Rapids. Her brother, H.C. Marshall who was suprintendant[sic] of the Milwaukee railroad, preceded her in death on Jan, 5, 1924.
Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church, Tuesday afternoon. The Rev. W.E. Fisher, pastor of the local Presbyterian church, and the Reverand[sic] S.R. Ferguson of Cedar Rapids were in charge of the services. Burial was made in Oak Shade cemetery. The Marion schools were closed all afternoon, as were the business houses during the hour of service.
