MARLAN DEATH BRINGS REGRET MARION PEOPLE
LOVABLE CHARACTER OF THIS CITY PASSES AWAY AT IOWA CITY
FOLLOWS OPERATION
Had a Wide Aquaintance[sic] and Took Special Delight in Doing Friendly Acts

Pliny C. Harlan died at the University hospital in Iowa City last Saturday morning, following an operation performed a week before, at the age of 66 years. The funeral was held from the Pingrey chapel Monday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. W. W. Argow of the People's church in Cedar Rapids in the absence of his own pastor, Rev. George T. Hanna.
The services were largely attended, the out-of-town relatives and friends including Mr. and Mrs. Harry Harlan of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Goldstein of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. O.E. Garrett, Jr., Mrs. Rebecca Dumont and daughter, Mrs. Mae Kelly, Mrs. Patterson and Mr. and Mrs. William Schrimper of Cedar Rapids.
Mr. Harlan learned and followed the printer's trade for many years, later entering the postoffice as a clerk and then for a time was a railway mail clerk. In later years he has done considerable newspaper reporting and clerical work. His was a most lovable character and he was never so happy as when doing some little friendly act, such as gathering nuts, mushrooms and fruit and presenting them to his friends.
He realized that the end was near when he went to Iowa City for the operation. He had been in failing health for some time, although he continued active up to the very minute he departed from the city. He told a number of his friends that he probably would never return alive.
