Donald Earl Harlan, 1405 Sixth avenue, a life-long resident of Marion, died Sunday morning at 4:15 a.m., in a Cedar Rapids hospital, following an illness of several weeks.
Mr. Harlan was born in Marion May 28, 1899, the son of Linneus C. and Lucy Hoover Harlan, and was married Sept. 29, 1927, at Marshalltown to Naomi Keenan, who survives together with their two children--Donald Earl, jr., and Carol Lou. Harlan, Marshalltown; Ray Harlan, Cedar Rapids, and Charles Harlan, Marion.
The deceased was a World War I veteran, having served overseas in some of that war's fiercest struggles--in the Meuse-Argonne campaign in the fall of 1918. He enlisted July 12, 1916, and left the United States July 20, 1918, returning to the states July 15, 1919. He was discharged as a sergeant of Company F, 60th infantry, on June 4, 1920. He was a member of Marion post, No. 298, American Legion, and was a painting contractor.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Yocom chapel, with the Rev. Vernon H. Carter, pastor of the Christian church, in charge. Interment was in Oak Shade cemetery, with the officers and firing squad of the American Legion post extending final military honors at the grave.
