The Marion Sentinel Thursday May 19, 1966
James B. Downing, 72, a resident of Cedar Rapids and Marion for almost 40 years, passed away at his home 722 Second ave., Marion. He was born the son of Elmer and Ida Myers Downing on June 29, 1893 near Vinton. On July 24, 1918 he was married to Mayme Race at Vinton. The Downings moved to Cedar Rapids in 1927 and he was employed by Penick and Ford plant. In 1938 the moved to Marion and Mr. Downing retired at Penick & Ford in 1960. He was a member of the Marion Christian church and of the Local 100, American Federation of Grain Millers.
Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Doris) Noe, of Garrison, Ia. and Mrs. Albert (Margaret) Suck of Marion; five grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd Downing of Vinton and two sisters, Mrs. Will (Blanche) Young of Mechanicsville and Mrs. Earl (Beatrice) Harrison of Cedar Rapids. A son, Curtis and four sisters, Berta Dietz, Lydia Steinmetz, Myrtle Meeks and Louise Downing preceded him in death.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the Murdoch Chapel in Marion, conducted by the Rev. Fred R. Gottwald of Cedar Rapids. Interment in Oak Shade Cemetery.
