Death of Mrs. W.H. Steele
---------------------------
Mrs. Wm. H. Steele died last Sunday morning at her late home, 1748 10th avenue, after being an invalid for many years. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, Rev. H.G. Finney being in charge, interment taking place in Oak Shade cemetery.
Sarah Jane Davison, daughter of the late Thomas and Malinda Davison, was born in Randolph county, Indiana, on Jan. 14, 1847, and died Feb. 25, 1917, in Marion, Iowa. On. Jan. 8, 1868, she was married to William H. Steele, to which union was born one son, William A. Steele.
In 1872 Mrs. Steele and her husband came to Iowa and settled in Davenport where they resided for about 15 years, moving from that city to Oxford Junction, Iowa, where they lived for a couple of years. In 1889 they moved to Kentucky, in which state they resided for about ten years.
In 1908 they came to Marion, having been called to this city on account of the tragic death of their son, an engineer on the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railway, whose death resulted from the explosion of his engine between Lost Nation and Elwood. They have since resided here.
Mrs. Steele was a member of the Presbyterian church, uniting with that denomination in 1867. Being an invalid during the past number of years, she was not privileged to attend church, nor the fraternal societies of which she previously took a great deal of pleasure. Before coming West she served a worthy chief of the Good Templar order and was also a member of the Women's Relief Corps. After coming to Marion she joined Marion Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, of which she was a member at the time of her death.
Besides her husband, who has been her devoted companion and attendant during the many years she has been an invalid, she is survived by her son's widow, two granddaughters and two grandsons.
