HERSHEY JONES IS DEAD.
---------------------
Pioneer Resident and Gallant Veteran Passed Away This Morning
At 6:30 this morning occurred the death of Hershey Jones, one of the best known citizens of Cedar Rapids at the residence of Mrs. L. Wallace in Fourth avenue, at the age of 68 years. The funeral will be held from the residence of B.H. Witwer at 3:30 Thursday afternoon; itnerment at Oak Hill.
Hershey Jones was born in Lancaster, N.Y., July 1, 1842 and removed with his parents to Wisconsin when very young. He enlisted in the Ninth Wisconsin cavalry, serving until the close of the war in the famous campaigns of the Army of the Frontier. After being mustered out Mr. Jones attended school for a time and then taught for several years. In 1869 he removed to Cedar Rapids, being appointed to a position in the railway mail service in that year. He resigned from the government service to go into the clothing business, the firm being Maxwell & Jones. While in business he was elected to the office of county recorder, which he filled most acceptably. After closing out his business Mr. Jones was appointed to the important position of deputy clerk of the United States court, which he filled for some time. Since retiring from active business life Mr. Jones has engaged as a deputy tax collector, ill health limiting his energies. He was a carter member of Cedar Rapids lodge No. 251 B.P.O.E., and also of the Occidental club. Hershey Jones was a man without enemies, good hearted, liberal and generous to a fault. For thirty years he had suffered from a chronic stomach trouble, which a few weeks ago superinduced a paralytic stroke. During all his final illness he spoke but one word, yet almost to the last he was able to recognize the many friends who came to call upon and to assist in caring for him. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Hamilton, of Onawa, Iowa, who is now in the city, and a cousin at Carroll, Iowa. His remains will be laid at rest beside those of this mother and sister, in Oak Hill.
