The Cedar Valley Times of Cedar Rapids, IA
Thursday February 7, 1861
In Marion, January 29th, 1861, MRS. MARY B. wife of Hon. WILLIAM SMYTH, of inflammation of the lungs, aged 37 years and 14 days.
It is seldom that we have to notice a death in which the words of inspired truth are more applicable, "His ways are past finding out." For bereaved husband, with a family at the very young age most needing a mother's care have been suddenly and unexpectedly made desolate.
At the early age of 15, Mrs. SMYTH gave herself to the Saviour and united with the Presbyterian Church at Crawfordsville, Indiana; on her removal here some ten years since, she also cast her lot with the children of God, and at the time of her decease was a member of the Free Presbyterian Church.
As a woman she was naturally of a decided character. In the performance of duty she was firm and fearless. As a member of society by all classes, and especially by those who walk in the humbler paths, she was known only to be beloved.
The responsibilities of a wife and mother were seldom more clearly understood, or more faithfully and tenderly performed and as a follower of Christ she was distinguished, not less by the steadfastness of her faith, than by the humanity of her life.
In her home and in society, in her life and in her death it may truthfully be recorded: "Blessed are the dead which died in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them." COM.
