THOMAS OVINGTON
Was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England, Nov. 10, 1815, and died in this city May 15th, 1895, in his 80th year. He was married in March 1837, to Miss Jane Leve, and to them one child was born. Both mother and child departed this life on the same day and are buried in England. Mr. Ovington came to this country in 1839 settling at Louisville, Kentucky, where he followed his trade as a Merchant Tailor. Here he was married Oct. 20th, 1840 to Miss Mary Cook. Their union was blest with five children, three sons and two daughters.
Charles, born Dec. 6th, 1841, now a resident of Clinton, Iowa; Mary J. (McCoy) born March 1844, residing at Trenton, Neb.; Thomas C. born in Marion, Oct. 20th, 1848, deceased; Samuel, born Jan. 13th, 1851, resides at Tabor, Iowa; Annie E. born April 2, 1864, resides in the parental home. The mother of these children departed this life in this city Nov. 9th, 1855.
Mr. Ovington was married June 8th, 1858 to Miss Matilda Morrow, who survives to mourn his death. She is a native of Pennsylvania.
To them were born seven children of whom five died in infancy.
Bennie, who was born Oct. 30th, 1866, a bright young lad, was killed by a horse Aug. 12th, 1878; Joseph was born Feb. 2, 1872, and resides in the home of his parents.
Of the near relatives of Mr. Ovington present on this occasion, there are, Mrs. Anna Starr, a sister, whose home is at Waterloo; of the children present there are Charles, Samuel, Anna and Joseph. Mrs. McCoy is detained at her home in Trenton, Nebraska.
Mr. Ovington came to Marion in 1845 and engaged in business as a merchant tailor, following the same for twenty years. He then merged it with the dry goods business. In 1885 he retired from active business and until the time of his death he resided in our city honored with the highest regard of all who knew him. He was a man of unblemished reputation, firm in his opinions and scrupulous in the keeping of his word. He was a firm believer in the Christian religion. He was baptized and confirmed in his youth as a member of Holy Trinity Church in Hull, England, and in this faith he lived and died. He united with the I.O.O.F in England and was affiliated with Osceola Lodge 18 of that order in this city.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Jno. W. Geiger of the Congregational church at his late home, 8th avenue, at 2:30 p.m., Friday, May 17th. Rev. Dr. Marshall of the Presbyterian church assisted.
