Daniel W. Yount, member of the G.A.R. and veteran of four years' service in the Civil war, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.T. Goudy, 854 First avenue, east, at 4:50 Thursday morning.
Mr. Yount was a typical gentleman of the old school. Ever polite and courteous he won the admiration and respect of the many persons numbered among his friends. He was born in Crawfordsville, Ind., in 1840. Mr. Yount came west while still a young man and entered Cornell college at Mt. Vernon in 1859. When the Civil war broke out he was one of the first to enlist and went from Mt. Vernon with the company that was organized among the students. He served in many of the important battles and experienced all of the trials and privations that come to a soldier. In one battle he was wounded and left on the field for dead but a band of comrades found him in time to save his life. At Mansfield, La., he was taken prisoner and sent to the Confederate prison at Andersonville where he was forced to remain until an exchange of prisoners took place.
Immediately after the war Mr. Yount was united in marriage to Miss Mary Anne Butler. The young couple moved to the western part of Iowa and took up residence at Audubon. Six children were born, three sons and three daughters. The three sons have since died but the daughters, Mrs. Fisher of Guthrie Center, Mrs. Forest Smith of Idaho and Mrs. J.T. Goudy of this city all survive their father.
Mrs. Yount died in 1882 and Mr. Young came to Marion in 1890. In 1902 he married Miss Nettie Jaquith who died in 1909[sic]. Since the death of his second wife Mr. Yount has lived with his daughter, Mrs. J.T. Goudy.
The only surviving relatives besides the daughters, are a brother, Henry Yount in Missouri and one sister, Mrs. John Franz of Marion.
Mr. Yount was a member of the Methodist church and of the G.A.R. post at Marion.
The funeral services will be held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Goudy, 854 First avenue, east, Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. Jayne officiating. The body will be taken to Audubon for interment.
Members of the G.A.R. the W.R.C. and Sons of Veterans are requested to be in attendance of the ceremonies. At the close of the regular funeral services, the G.A.R. will take charge and the ritual will be read.
