Obituary of Mrs. Samuel Wiles.
---------------------------------
Lovina Wiles was born in Pennsylvania, near Pittsburg, April 3, 1845, and died at her home east of Marion, January 7, 1911. While yet a child, she was thrown on her own resources, and found service with Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Brown, with whom she came to Iowa, to Jackson county, and later to Linn county, where she continued in their employ until her marriage to Samuel Wiles on August 13, 1879. After her marriage she and her husband purchased of Samuel Brown his beautiful home farm, and by industry and economy paid for it and added other lands until the poor, orphaned working girl had become the possessor of much of this world's goods and with her husband one of the wealthiest landholders in Linn county.
Her care and kindness to Mr. and Mrs. Brown, when enfeebled and afflicted by age and disease, was most praiseworthy. No daughter could have shown a more filial solicitude nor ministered with more watchful tenderness to this aged couple; and the home where Mr. and Mrs. Brown had begun life as pioneers, in no wise changed its character after its conveyance to the deceased, only to free them from the responsibility and care incident to the management of a large farm, and for which they had become unfitted by age and affliction.
This, if there was nothing else in her life to commend it, would be that charity which covers a multitude of sins.
She was a helpmate in deed and truth to her husband. Of keen insight, and cultivated business endowment, her judgement and advice were worthy of consideration in all commercial enterprises. She had her faults, so have we all. She achieved success according to the standards of the world. There was much that was good and king in her life. This we should cherish and emulate.
