MRS. HARRIET STINGER DIED WEDNESDAY
----------------------------------
The death of Mrs. Harriett Singer, one of Marion's earliest citizens, occurred Wednesday just before noon at her home, 525 Eleventh street.
Her illness started Feb. 3rd. Up to that time this remarkable woman had never been ill more than two weeks in her life and though small in stature, was a bundle of vitality, and in the year before her death had pieced thirteen quilts. She retained full possession of her faculties to the last, was up-to-date in her ideas, and met whatever life held with a sustaining philosophy.
She was born in a log house in Delaware county, Ohio, March 17, 1846, of Yankee stock, her father, Reuben Rundall, being from Horseneck, Conn., and her mother, Martha Tompkins Rundall, a native of Trenton, New Jersey. At the age of seven, her parents moved to Iowa by the covered wagon route, crossing the Mississippi at Davenport by ferry, and settling first near Fairview, in Jones county, where she went to school, later moving to a farm northwest of Mt. Vernon. The site of Martelle was then farm land. Her father obtained the land direct from the government, and a grandson, Frank Stinger, now lives on the same farm.
Shew as married to Francis B. Stinger March 27, 1868. They moved to Marion in 1873, settling on what was then South Meridian street, in the house which, but for a two and one-half year interval ball hotel, had been her home for when they conducted the old New-[this is as written] 82 years. Her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Parson, occupy the same home.
Two boys and one daughter, Effie, were born to this home, DeVer dying at the age of 4, and Frederick, now a resident of Elkader, Ia. The husband died May 12, 1915. The deceased also is survived by two brothers, C.O. Rundall of Marion and S.S. Rundall of Moville, Ia., and by three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The grandchildren are Francis Stinger, Fairview, Mrs. Florence Letts, Volga, and Mrs. Leta Lewis, Jacksonville, Fla. The great-grandchildren are Doris and Shirley Stinger, Chauncey Lewis and Mrs. Betty Powell.
Mrs. Stinger had been active in the Presbyterian church in her earlier years. Funeral services will be held Saturday at the Yocom chapel, with Dr. W.E. Fisher in charge.
