LOVING TRIBUTE PAID TO MEMORY MR. A SHUMACK
-------------------------------------------
FUNERAL OF PIONEER RESIDENT OF MARION HELD FROM HOME MONDAY
-------------------------------------------
STORES ARE CLOSED
-------------------------------------------
Had Been a Resident of Marion Since a Boy of 3 Years of Age.
With all the business houses of Marion closed between the hours of 2:30 and 3:30 Monday afternoon, Marion gathered at the family home to pay a last and loving tribute to the memory of the late Anthony Shumack, who died at his home last Friday after a long illness. Not alone in the presence of those who had known him through life at the final obsequies was the esteem and affection attested, but in the many floral offerings which carried their message of sympathy and condolence. The services were conducted by Rev. Earle A. Baker, pastor of the Methodist church, and the interment was in Oak Shade cemetery.
Anthony Shumack was born in Cedar Rapids Jan. 15, 1859, and it was when he was 3 years of age that the family moved to Marion, which had been his home up to the time of his death. In fact practically his entire life was spent within the confines of the block where the Shumack home is located.
For a number of years he was engaged in the grocery business, while yet a boy having been in the employ of B.F. Mentzer, later purchasing the business with Horace E. Reiter. A year after his first illness he sold his interest to Mr. Reiter, since which time he has not been active.
On June 5, 1888 he was married to Miss Jessie Holub of Prairieburg, who, with one son, G.A. Shumack, and a daughter, Mrs. Carl Peterson, survive. He is also survived by a brother, Frank Shumack of this city, another brother and sister having preceded him in death.
While public spirited and held in the highest regard, the one quality which was most distinctive to him was his fidelity and loyalty to his home and his business. He was unusually happy in his home life and very devoted to his loved ones.
