Josephine Shumack, Former Resident of Marion, Dead
Josephine Elizabeth Shumack, a resident of Marion most of her life, died Monday, Jan. 15, at three a.m. at her home, 1548 B avenue, NE, Cedar Rapids, her home for the past three years. She was born April 11, 1867, at Prairieburg, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Holub. She came to Marion as a girl and was married here June 5, 1888, to Anthony E. Shumack, a well-known groceryman of this city for many years. He died January 4, 1924. After breaking up housekeeping, she lived for a number of years with her daughter.
Surviving Mrs. Shumack are her son, Arthur and her daughter, Mrs. LaVona Peterson, both of Cedar Rapids, and by three grandchildren, Joyce, Dean and Dianne Peterson; also by a brother and four sisters, Mrs. Anna Houser of Pipestone, Minn., Joe Holub and Mrs. Barbara Drexler of Prairieburg; Mrs. Kate Kozina and Mrs. Mary Lala of Center Point.
Funeral services were held at the Yocom chapel in Marion Wednesday, with the Rev. Arthur W. Henke, pastor of the Methodist church, in charge of the services, with Miss Ruth Engstrom at the organ. Burial was in Oak Shade cemetery.
