W.P. Secrist, 86, Former County Supervisor, Dead
William Penn Secrist, 86, former Linn county supervisor, died Thursday at 8:45 p.m. at his home, 1096 Eleventh street. Mr. Secrist was born Jan. 28, 1856, in Augusta county, Va., the son of David W. and Susan Burkett Secrist. He was the last of a family of seven brothers and a sister.
At the age of five he came with his parents to Linn county, settling on a farm six miles east of Marion. In 1879 he was married to Nancy E. Van Fossen of Marion. They moved to their present home in 1907 and the following year Mr. Secrist became a county supervisor, an office he held for nine years. He was an active member of the Marion Methodist church.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, J. Earl Secrist, of Springville, and four daughters, Mrs. Susie M. Berry, Mrs. Bertha A. Beach and Mrs. Ruby E. Hanscom of Marion, and Mrs. Julia B. Roberts of DeWitt. A son, Carl Owen Secrist, died in 1940. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Nancy Ellen Hanscom of Ames and Ruth Hanscom of Marion, who have made thier home with their grandparents, since the death of their father, Allen Hanscom. There are 19 other grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Yocom chapel in charge of the Rev. Arthur W. Henke and the Rev. E. T. Gough of Mt. Vernon. Burial will be in the family lot in Oak Shade cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
