Thursday April 10, 1902 The Marion Sentinel
David Fowler, son of Charles and Matilda Fowler, was born near Fairfax, Nov. 20th, 1874. When a child his parents came to Marion to reside. He attended the public schools of our city until the age of fourteen. He was employed as clerk in two business houses of Marion, the last of which he served for nine years.
He was married to Miss Lura Locke in Marion, Nov. 3rd, 1897. One child blessed their marriage, Walter Roland, aged two and a half years who survives his father. He leaves his grief stricken wife, his mother, a sister, Lefee Fowler, and two brothers, Thomas of Cedar Rapids and Frank of Marion.
Fifteen months ago he had an attack of la grippe, followed by a long an painful rheumatic affliciation. Four weeks ago he had to relinquish business, and began to fail rapidly. He lingered in increasing pain and weakness until ten minutes past five p.m. April 4th, when theh sands of life ebbed out.
He was prepared and desirous to go. For a long time he believed he would get well, but toward the last of his life he realized it was not to be, and was resigned to the Divine Will. He was a loving son, and brother and a devoted husband and father. He was a member of the M.E. church of Marion, having joined in 1894.
He was quiet and gentle in disposition, cheerful and happy in spirit. He bore his sufferings with great fortitude and undisturbed confidence in Jesus Christ. The night before he died he was filled with rapture and through the night was heard saying "Glory to God" and declaring "It was all right." He died in the Lord and is blessed beyond compare for he is forever with the Lord.
The funeral was held from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 3:30. The attendance was very large, the auditorium and galleries being filled with sympathizing friends and neighbors who came to pay a last tribute of respect to an honored citizen. Many beautiful flowers were placed upon and near the casket.
The service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. N. Pye, who was assisted by Rev. F.M. Smith of the Baptist church. The music was furnished by the chorus choir.
The Fitzgarrald hose team of which he was a member attended in a body. Interment was in Oak Shade cemetery.
