Charles Burns Rites Monday
Charles D. Burns, 85, of 809 Central avenue and a lifelong resident of the Marion vicinity, died Thursday in a Cedar Rapids hospital.
He was born April 16, 1885, north of Marion. On June 2, 1923, at Cedar Rapids, he was married to Laura Tripp, who died June 13, 1954. Mr. Burns was graduated from Marion high school and Coe college. He was an engineer for the state highway commission and the Howard R. Green Co.
He retired in 1955, after serving 11 years as Marion postmaster, and served two terms on the Marion city council, from 1962-65. Mr. Burns was a member of the First United Methodist church; Marion Lodge 6, AF nad[sic]AM, Conopus club; Cedar Rapids-Marion Chamber of Commerce; and the Iowa Historical Society.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Donald Ellis of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Ralph Parks of Marion; three nephews and one niece.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday at the Murdoch chapel in Marion conducted by the Rev. Lloyd C. Kellams and Marion Lodge 6, AF and AM. Burial: Oak Shade cemetery in Marion. Friends may call at the chapel after 2 p.m. Saturday. All Master Masons are requested to meet at the Temple at 10:15 a.m. Monday to attend the services.
Friends may, if they wish, contribute to the Methodist church memorial fund.
