J.R. Van Fossen Passes Away Saturday Evening With Funeral Held Tuesday

Following an illness which continued since last fall following an operation for the amputation of one of his limbs, James Rufus Van Fossen died Saturday evening at 6:30 o'clock at the F.M. Serack home, at the age of 68 years. The funeral services were held at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Earle A. Baker and interment was in Oak Shade cemetery.
Mr. Van Fossen was born September 26, near Toddville. He lived in Linn county all his life until June 1926, when he moved to Spirit Lake, Idaho, and engaged in railroad work until December, 1922. While he was ill he wished to be brought back to Marion and arrived here March 3 and the family took rooms in the Serack home.
He was married near Marion, Feb. 23, 1886, to Miss Angeline Gray and is survived by her and by four daughters, four sons, two sisters and four brothers. The sons are W.R. Van Fossen of near Marion; Harry of Spirit Lake, Idaho; Walter and Merle of Marion. The daughters are, Mrs. Willis Whiting, Marion; Mrs. Merle Spencer, Spirit Lake, Idaho; Mrs. Earnest Barnes, Spirit Lake, Idaho; Marion, at home. The sisters are Mrs. Ed. Butterfield, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. W.P. Secrist, Marion; one sister, Mrs. Martha Butterfield, is dead. The brothers are John A. Van Fossen of Lisbon; Peter, Center Point; Jacob, Shellsburg; Alvin, Toddville. There are also ten surviving grandchildren
