DEATH TAKES WELL KNOWN PHYSICIAN OF COUNTY SEAT
----------------------------------
Dr. George S. Muirhead, prominent physician of Marion, died at a Cedar Rapids hospital Sunday night at 11 o'clock. He was 51 years of age. He had been ill about three weeks, due to overwork, and finally succumbed to pulminary tuberculosis. He was born in Keene, Peterborough county, Ontario, Oct. 18, 1867, the youngest of eight children.
He came to Iowa in 1873 with his parents, who located on a farm near Tipton, in Cedar county, for one year and then moved to Tama county, near Traer, whrer they made their permanent home and where Dr. Muirhead grew to manhood.
When 19 years of age he became a teacher, continuing in this work for about three years and studying medicine in vacations with Dr. Parsons of Traer. He then attended the college of medicine of the State University of Iowa, at Iowa City, graduating in 1891, and locating at Marion, where he practiced with marked and increasing success to the time of his death.
Prominent in many community activities in Marion, Dr. Muirhead was especially an ardent worker in Masonic circles. He belonged to all of the Masonic lodges, and was a past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a past master of the A.F. & A.M. He was also a member of the lodge of Elks.
He was of Scotch ancestry, rugged and sturdy, clear minded and pronounced, efficient and fearless, and yet as kind as a mother and as tender as a child. He was a stalwart man in the profession and practice, broad minded and charitable, considerate and thoughtful in civil life he was public spirited and progressive, while socially he was a comrade and a prince, winning and holding the friendship and confidence of all who came within the circle of his acquaintance. He formed and expressed opinions upon all great questions and current issues, and yet without offense. He was fair minded and just, of keen discernment and balanced judgement, yet withal most considerate and charitable.
He was a man of rare skill and unerring intuition. This, coupled with a heart of deep sympathy and inspiring personality, made him the idol of the many stricken homes where he ministered not only as the family physician, but was enshrined as comforter and friend. His skill in diagnosis was almost uncanny, while as a surgeon he was a master and in the treatment of disease a peer in the profession.
There has been no man living in Marion during the last twenty-five years whose loss will be more keenly felt and whose death will be more universally mourned.
Funeral services will be held at the residence of Miss Mary E. Muirhead, 380 South Eleventh street, Marion, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Rev. H.G. Finney of the Presbyterian church officiating.
