Wednesday October 18, 1911 The Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette Marion News
Mary Alice Nash was born in Concord, Morgan county, Ill., December 28, 1852 and passed away peacefully in her home in Marion, October 16, 1911, her age being 58 years 9 months and 18 days. In her early life she came with her parents to Linn county, Iowa, and settled near Marion.
She was united in marriage to Mr. William E. Sigfred, June 30, 1871. Three children were born to them: Oran, traveling salesman, of Omaha, Neb.; Ed, clothing merchant of Marion, and Miss Bertha of Marion, the husband and father having died in Springville, Iowa, March 2, 1887, leaving her with the responsibility of bringing up her children.
In 1895 she came to Marion to make a home for her boys who were employed here. Mrs. Sigfred cheerfully submitted to the new responsibilities which came to her in the loss of her husband, and sought to do what she could for her family. Through the years she struggled hard and long, and was ever thoughtful, patient and considerate, faithfully fulfilling the duties of a true and worthy mother. She was a Christian woman having been a member of the Methodist church for more than forty years, and did what she could to help the church in its work. She was a true woman, a kind neighbor, and a friend to everybody. While struggling to live, she was prepared to die, and it was without any fears that she crossed the river. All was peace between her and God and while she loved her earthly home, the heavenly home had great attractions for her. The Master's tribute will be hers, "She hath done what she could."
The family have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement. The funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday, Oct. 18, and were conducted by Rev. S.R. Beatty, pastor of the Methodist church.
