Thursday December 29, 1910 The Marion Sentinel
Annie Arbuckle was born in Scotland, May 28 [sic], 1859, where she received her education. She removed to this country some thirty years ago. She met Mr. McLay soon after, and was united in marriage Nov. 3, 1881. Eight children were born to this union. Four of them preceded her to the heavenly home and four: James A., of Adrian, Mo.; Will W., east of Marion; Albert G. and Archie A., at home, who with the husband and three brothers, James Arbuckle of St. Louis, who is vice council to Spain; Archie of Louisville, Ky., and Alexander of Chicago, Ill., and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Strang, of Spokane, Wash., survive her and mourn her departure.
The family moved here to Marion from Wisconsin 12 years ago and lived on the Jas. Oxley farm, east of town. Eight years ago they removed to Missouri where they lived until 2 years ago, when they came back to Marion to make their permanent home.
She early confessed her faith in Christ and united with the Church in Scotland where she retained her membership until last Easter when she united with the Presbyterian Church in Marion. She took an active interest in all lines of Christian and philanthropic work, and we may well apply to her the words she wrote in memory of a departed friend:
"Full well we know that this our loss,
Hath added a jewel to heaven's bright throne.
And, we, when Jesus gently bids us cross
That river, will see its radiance in our home.
Then joy supremely sweet hath filled our hearts,
And thrust that cold, sharp dagger of sorrow aside.
Now we know that she who in sadness departs
Will claim her own in Heaven and dwell in love forever and aye."
She wrote a number of poems, one of them was read by Rev. Smith at the funeral service which was held in the Presbyterian Church Saturday morning, Dec. 24, the last lines of which are
"And we shall grow wiser and stronger and better,
And the year 1910 will grow brighter as it shall grow old."
