Mrs. John T. Liddle, 101, died Monday night in St. Luke's hosptial, where she had lived nearly seven years.
Recognized as one of Cedar Rapids' shrewdest investors, Mrs. Liddle was a wealthy woman as a result of wise investments in local industrial and food stocks.
Mrs. Liddle entered St. Luke's in January of 1948. She was the hospital's oldest resident, both in age and length of stay. She turned 101 years of age Dec. 3.
Born in 1853 in Batavia, Ill., she was married in 1872 to John Liddle and a year later they moved to Cedar Rapids from Nevada, Ia. Mrs. Liddle was a piano teacher and her husband a realtor. When her husband died in 1909, she was left numerous small properties, which she gradually converted to good securities.
Her investments doubled and redoubled her wealth, and through the years she was able to help an untold number of people and institutions.
In 1945 she gave $25,000 to the Home for Aged Women, but the First Presbyterian church was her principal interest.
She paid for the education of three girls at Cole college, and made it financially possible for the husband of one of them to study for the ministry. Each of the girls lived in the Liddle home at 831 First avenue SE, while attending Coe. A few years ago she {continued on page 4}
