Services for Emma E. Courtney, 95, veteran teacher and long-time resident of Marion, were held in the Yocom chapel Sunday with the Rev. James P. Gable officiating.
She died at her home at 809 Sixth avenue last Friday after a long illness. She was born Nov. 20, 1852, five miles east of Marion on the old Dubuque trail. The eldest daughter of Joe M. and Mary Ann Keenan Courtney, she was raised in the Crab Apple neighborhood and moved to Marion in 1891.
Her education began in Miss Small's private school and she entered Marion high school when it first started. She completed her education at the Indiana Normal School at Valpariso, Ind.
A teacher for many years, she was principal of Springville High school for eight years, and taught in Nevada and Cedar Rapids. Shew as principal of a Rockford, Ill., school when she retired because of ill health.
She was a member of the Methodist church at Crab Apple and Marion.
She is survived by three sister; Retta and Belle, of Marion, and Mary, of Long Beach, Calif. A sister, Lola, and two brothers, W.J. and Marl W. Courtny preceded her in death.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Bert Nedrow, L.O. Dickey, Herbert Dunn, Marvin Oxley, E.J. Miller and Elmer Fisher. Burial was in Oak Shade cemetery.
