Former Resident, 93, Buried Here
Funeral services for Mary Alivilda Courtney, 93, a former resident of Marion, were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Yocom Chapel, with the Rev. James P. Gable officiating. Burial was in the Oak Shade cemetery. Pallbearers were Earl Miller, Marvin Oxley, Peter Lassen, Bert Klumph, Bert Nedrow and Jack Bowdish.
Miss Courtney passed away in Long Beach, Cal., May 31. She was born on the old Courtney Homestead five miles east of Marion on the Old Dubuque Trail on May 16, 1856, the daughter of Joel M. and Mary Ann Courtney. She spent most of her girlhood in the Crabapple Neighborhood.
After graduating from Marion high school, Miss Courtney received a degree from Cornell college. She majored in speech. She taught for many years in the Lisbon, Mt. Vernon and Marion schools. After her retirement, she resided in Long Beach.
Miss Courtney was a member of the Methodist Church, besides belonging to several clubs, The Elder Bloom club, the Long Beach City Literary club and the Iowa Society.
She is survived by two sisters, D. Belle and Retta E. Courtney of Marion, and several vieces and nephews.
