Marion Register Wednesday July 24, 1907
The funeral services of Frank Dates were held Monday at 10:30 a.m. The casket came in on the morning train from Portsmouth via Chicago. He died in the service of his country, having been with the navy for a period of two years, following an attack of typhoid fever. The services were held at the grave on the southern slope of Gray's addition to the Marion cemetery. There was a large attendance of friends of the deceased and the family. The services were conducted by Pastor Hutton of the Congregational church. Appropriate music by Mrs. V.G. Shumack, Miss Laura Tripp, D.E. Voris and J.J. Booth. The pall bearers were Carl F. Reichert, J.B. Travis, Frank Holmes, Don W. Rathbun, A W. Straley and John R. Brown. Mr. and Mrs. Dates, and the absent sister, Mrs. Ray Knowlton, have the sympathy of every one. Frank was a young man of far more than average ability. His record in the navy was perfect and he enjoyed the confidence of the officers men with whom he was associated. They did everything possible for him during his illness and a leave of absence had been granted that he might visit his home. But all that medical skill and loving hands could do was unavailing. In closing, the REGISTER voices the universal regards of all our people.
