LOCAL WOMAN, LINN PIONEER, DIED MONDAY
Mrs. Laura Crew, 87, pioneer Linn county resident, died at her home, 843 Central avenue, Monday afternoon, following a paralytic stroke July 4.
Mrs. Crew was born in Bellville, Ohio, Nov. 18, 1846, the daughter of Ellwood and Catherine Orrison. In 1865 she was married to John C. Crew, and the next year they migrated to Iowa, making a part of the trip to the unsettled prairie home by stage coach. They experience many of the hardships of the pioneer during the first years in the west. They established their first home a few miles east of Springville. Mrs. Crew was the mother of seven children. One died in infancy. Four sons, James Delbert, Harlan John, George Sewell, Herbert Paul and one daughter, Ada Belle, preceded her in death. She is survived by one son, Dr. A.E. Crew of this city, also fourteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
After the death of her husband, Mrs. Crew lived many years in Marion, and for the past seventeen years, she and Mrs. Rachel Ives, mother of Mrs. A.E. Crew, have made their home together.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Yocom chapel, with Dr. John M. Walters, pastor of the Methodist church in charge. Interment was made in Oak Shade cemetery.
Among the out-of-town relatives and friends attending the services were Mrs. Maude Barry of Omaha, Mrs. Julian Jackson and two daughters, of Boston, Mass., and Mr. and Mrs. Galen Lindeman of Bloomington, Ill.
