Walker – Barbara Burk Kurt, 67 years old, of rural Walker, Iowa, died suddenly on Friday, July 18, 2014. She was born on August 6, 1946, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of George Thomas and Geraldine Louise (Turner) Burk. She graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1964, and then attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. In 1965, she and Kenneth Howard Cappel, Sr., were married at St. James Episcopal Church in Independence. They were later divorced. Mrs. Kurt retired from Aegon Insurance Company in Cedar Rapids in 2011. She also raised American Quarter Horses. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Independence, the National Rifle Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association.

Mrs. Kurt is survived by 2 sons, Kenneth H. Cappel, Jr., of Jesup, Iowa, and Tim (Jenny) Cappel of Independence, Iowa, and 2 grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 sisters, Sandra Krepfle of Dubuque, Iowa, and Georgeann (Charles) Noel of Fairchild, Wisconsin, 1 brother, Thomas (Barbara) Burk of St. Paul, Minnesota, her special friend, Roger Bistline of Walker, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 1 brother, George Burk, Jr.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at St. James Episcopal Church in Independence with Rev. Sue Ann Raymond officiating. The family will receive friends for an hour before services. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Independence at a later date.

White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements.
