Obituary of Marcus Lysander Ball-
Killed By The Cars Flyer at Winthrop:
In the Winthrop letter of this issue will be found a detailed account of the accidental death of Mr. M.L. Ball of that place. No death could have been more generally regretted and in this community where the best part of his life was spent and the distressing accident brought sorrow to everyone whose privilege it was to know him.
Mr. Ball could be classed as one of the old settlers of Buchanan County and contributed his part to its development and progress. He was a splendid example of that high type of manhood of which our pioneers were composed and won from his associates the highest degree of confidence and esteem. That his death should occur in such a way almost at the beginning of a period of rest from his labors seems peculiarly untimely and unfortunate.
Marcus L. Ball was born in Broom County, N.Y., March 22, 1838. He came to Iowa when 17 years of age, settling in Linn County. On the third of April, 1861, he was married to Miss Mary Ellen Keller and in 1966 moved to Newton Township where he lived for 16 years, coming to Liberty Township in 1882 where he resided continuously until two years ago last February when he moved to Winthrop.
Besides his wife he leaves four children, three sons and one daughter. The sons are W. W. Ball, H. F. Ball, and Marshall L. Ball all of whom live near here, and in fact have spent their lives in this locality. The eldest Will W. was born 44 years ago and the others 40 and 27 respectively. The only daughter, Mrs. Ester Jane Hoover, lives at Frankfort, S. D. Mr. Ball is also survived by two brothers and one sister; Wm. H. Ball of Waterloo, John Ball, of Creston, and Mrs. Sarah Turner, whose home is in New York State.
