Henry "Hank" Scheu, Jr., 88, of Springfield died at 3:27 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at Memorial Medical Center.
Henry was born August 4, 1919 in St. Louis, the son of Henry J. and Frances Mueller Scheu, Sr. He married Rita L. O'Rourke, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on July 31, 1943; she preceded him in death in 2000. Rita's sisters, Betty Biddick, Shirley Lemon, and Della Barnett, and brothers, David O'Rourke and Robert Scott, presently reside in the Cedar Rapids and Marion area.
Henry was a U.S. Army Veteran who served as a radar crewman. He ran and repaired search-lights in the Pacific Theater in WWII. He was awarded the Bronze Star and good conduct medals. He attended Washington University in St. Louis for a year after his return from the service. He began working for Heil Packing Company in 1937, then in 1964 transferred to Cape Girardeau, MO where he worked for Central Foods as the office manager and Treasurer.
He was a member of Church of the Little Flower since 1993, and enjoyed playing bridge.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by a son: Dr. James H. (wife, Karen) Scheu of St. Charles, MO; two daughters: Marjorie Gladish of Springfield, and Molly (husband, Greg) Turner of Jacksonville, FL; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends from 4 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 17, 2007 at Church of the Little Flower, 800 Adlai Stevenson Dr., Springfield, with Rev. Michael Haag celebrant.
Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Department of Defense and the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
